STEM is FASHIONABLE
Year: 01/11/2024 – 01/05/2026
Program: Erasmus+ Small Scale Partnership
Project description
The STEM is FASHIONABLE project encourages young people to explore STEM professions in the textile and fashion industry, focusing on innovation and sustainability. Through posters, practical experiments, and a teacher's guide, it promotes inclusive learning and future skills development. The goal is to prepare a new generation to tackle industry challenges effectively.
With the STEM is FASHIONABLE project, we aim to inspire young people in their career orientation phase to explore the many STEM-related professions transforming the textile and fashion industry. Our goal is to go beyond traditional roles like tailor or fashion designer, highlighting the innovative positions needed to address the sector's challenges.
Innovation and Sustainability in Textiles and Fashion
Sustainability in fashion is not achieved solely through consumer awareness or transparent supply chains but requires:
- Innovations in traditional fibre production, such as replacing synthetic fibres derived from petroleum with eco-friendly alternatives.
- Eco-conscious production processes (spinning, weaving, and knitting) to minimize the use of protective or lubricating chemicals.
- Sustainable textile finishing, reducing chemicals used in dyeing and finishing processes.
- Development of efficient machinery, enabling material-friendly production processes.
Project Objectives
- R1: Creation of posters illustrating STEM-related professions in the textile industry in a clear, informative, and engaging way along the production chain.
- R2: Development of hands-on scientific-chemical experiments inspired by the textile production process to guide young people toward STEM and enhance their skills.
- R3: Preparation of a guide for teachers and trainers to facilitate the use of experiments in educational and extracurricular activities.
Inclusion and Diversity in Learning
The project emphasizes inclusivity by offering methods that address diverse learning styles:
- Auditory, visual, kinesthetic, and cognitive-intellectual.
- Learning experiences are designed to engage “head, heart, and hands” (inspired by Pestalozzi), making STEM concepts accessible even for young people with learning difficulties.
Experiential Learning and Future Skills
- Experiments provide visible and tangible results, sparking interest and motivation in young learners.
- Promotion of the Future Skills Profile, including:
- Design Thinking: creative problem-solving.
- Learning and reflective abilities, crucial for thriving in complex, evolving environments.
The acquired skills equip young people to address future challenges with cognitive, social, and value-oriented resources.
