New forms of traineeship for vocational grammar schools

Year: 01/04/2023 – 31/03/2025

Development of a learning workshop model for short-term work experience abroad

A European company improves its competitiveness on the international market if it can also have staff trained through work experience abroad. Thanks to the Erasmus+ programme, more and more schools can organise work placements in foreign companies for their students.

The traineeship enables them to apply the knowledge and skills acquired at home in a different context, not only in terms of language and personal development but also in organisational terms. The young person thus trained comes back with a broader vision of his/her professional future.

In many cases, however, the time abroad is not sufficient for in-depth experience of day-to-day business practice. Those who attend school normally have a maximum of two weeks (except in summer when the company offer is not high).

Consequently, different forms of time spent abroad are needed to ensure the acquisition of skills useful to the internationally operating corporate world.

The aim of the 'New forms of traineeship abroad' project is to develop one- or two-week programmes during which theoretical/practical skills already acquired in a context other than one's own are compared.

Starting from a SWOT analysis of the needs of technical and vocational schools concerning work placements abroad in the three partnership countries, a 'Learning Workshop' model is developed, which is adapted to various vocational pathways.

The learning workshop involves a mixed approach between theory and practice where part of the work is done in the classroom on the topics and part in the laboratory and in job shadowing. It requires the use of a wide range of methods, both traditional learning and group work, peer-to-peer, work-based learning and others. In cooperation with the partner(s) on site and under the supervision of the accompanying teacher, the young people experience the working reality of the host country intensively.

Target group:

  • technical and vocational schools in Europe already active or intending to activate the placement abroad (directly)
  • coordinators/managers of work placements abroad (directly)
  • students of technical and vocational schools (indirectly)
  • authorities in charge of technical/vocational training (indirectly)
  • authorities involved in vocational-technical training (indirectly)

Expected results:

  • Transnational SWOT analysis of schools' needs with regard to apprenticeships abroad
  • Elaboration of a multilingual guidance manual for schools and those responsible for the implementation of the work placement abroad consisting of
  • Collection of methodologies for the preparation, implementation and evaluation of the placement abroad
  • Models of implementation programmes for new forms of placements
  • Checklist for the implementation of a Learning Workshop
